The Gist

Kids in a very spooky school battle everything from mean girls to egregious professors to ghosts, and honestly, even though they’re usually ticked off, the ghosts seem nicer to deal with, which is saying something.

  • Horror

  • Gothic tales

  • If you wanted the school in Nevermore to play more of a role in Wednesday

The Verdict: Read It!

Haunted Hallways brings together fourteen stories that are set in the Mallory Thorne School of Excellence. The stories span across multiple decades, starting in the 1960s and ending in the present day. The stories in this collection deal with an array of themes and topics that range from sexuality to identity to racism to religion to elitism. In their own way, each story calls into question whether or not academia is actually preparing its students and the methods being used to prepare them. Although this question is never explicitly asked or stated, it bubbles up as you read deeper and deeper into the anthology. It’s a sign of good storytelling and Haunted Hallways has this this in spades. The stories are well-paced and the writing is sharp.
