Verdict: Read It, Keep It, Come Back to It

There is a common (and comical) belief for many writers that writing a book, getting it published, and having it be wildly successful will a) be straightforward and b) solve their problems (e.g., self-esteem, finances, etc.). In Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott candidly, but gently breaks down this fantasy through personal anecdotes and examples from her own writing journey. The process and the joy that comes with writing (even when it’s a grind) is what Lamott pushes to drive home in this book, making it a must-read for beginners and a staple for veteran writers who need to recenter themselves. Bird by Bird is and most likely will remain a classic craft book and for good reason.
